“The History of Romanian civilization”, a book introducing a unique period in the national history, the period between the world wars, under the signature of Professor Ioan Scurtu, was presented on Tuesday, at Titulescu House, in Bucharest.

“This is a unique work in the current historical literature landscape due to its richness of information, bibliography and the way to write history”, underlined Professor Ioan Opris, summing up the historian Ioan Scurtu’s book, which in its almost 400 pages comes up with aspects referring to the historical context following the Great Unification in 1918, the economic and intellectual activity, income and spending, life in a couple, housing, food, clothes, hygiene and health, school and church, politics and leisure time.

According to the author, he used for his book numerous archive documents – the Council of Ministries’ Presidency, the Royal House, MAE and also personal ones, volumes of documents mainly published in statistical annuals, in the press, daily notes and memoirs, other works signed by Mihail Manoilescu, Constantin C. Giurescu, Duiliu Marcu, Dumitru Sandru, Gheorghe and Luminita Iacob, Adrian Majuru, Ioana Parvulescu, Nicolae Enciu.

“A fruit of 10 years of labor, a significant book for the current study of Romanian historiography”, as the author himself said, historian Ioan Scurtu’s book was preceded by several studies on this topic: a distinct chapter in “The History of Romanians in the twentieth century”, published together with Gheorghe Buzatu, in 1999, the Romanian society in the period between the world wars, the Romanian history treaty, volume 8 – “United Romania” (2003).

As well, Ioan Scurt published in 2001, at RAO Publishing House, the book “Romanians’ daily life in the period between the two world wars” and, in 2007, the lecture series “Inter-war Romanian civilization” (19 18-1940), at the Publishing house of “Tomorrow’s Romania” Foundation.

Ioan Scurtu is president of the Historical Sciences Society in Romania and member of the Academy of Scientists in Romania. He published more than 100 books, of which 28 as the author, 38 as coordinator and co-author, 53 as co-author; 7 in international languages, some 220 studies in specialty journals, of which 209 authored by him and 22 in international languages (English, French, Russian, German).
