The selection of films was made by the critics of The Guardian, who took into consideration over 100 pictures. Together with ‘Katalin Varga,’ among the titles of the best debut films are also ‘Anvil! The Story of Anvil’ (director Sacha Gervasi), ‘Better Things’ (director Duane Hopkins), ‘District 9′ (director Neill B lomkamp), ‘Helen’ (directors Joe Lawlor, Christine Molloy), ‘In the Loop’ (director Armando Iannuci), ‘Mid-August Lunch’ (director Gianni di Gregorio), ‘Moon’ (director Duncan Jones), ‘Sleep Furiously’ (director Gideon Koppel), ‘Synecdoche, New York’ (director Charlie Kaufman).
The best debut film in 2008 was ‘Unrelated,’ directed by Joanna Hogg. The film received the Silver Bear in 2009 for outstanding artistic contribution at the Berlin Film Festival, the Great Award at the Copenhagen Film Festival, Best Direction Award at the Montenegro Film Festival, Great Award at the Piestany Film Festival (Slovakia) and actress Hilda Peter (from the Hungarian Theatre in Cluj) won the Best Performance Award, within the seventh Brussels Film Festival. The main characters are performed by Hilda Peter, Tibor Palffy and Laszlo Matraz.
