The Romanian Parliament’s lower Deputies’ Chamber unanimously voted on Monday for the draft law on the ratification of the Agreement between the two neighbours, which will allow the Moldovans living in the common border area to stay visa-free in Romania for a limited period of time.
‘The moves we have been making for more than two years have yielded fruit and I am glad that finally the Romanians living on the border between Romania and the Republic of Moldova will be able to benefit from this agreement. In fact, the agreement between Romania and Moldova was signed on last November 13, on the occasion of the visit paid to Bucharest by Moldovan Premier Vlad Filat, who asked that the agreement be ratified by year-end. However, ratification was put off because of the elections in Romania’, Movila said.
According to the document, the citizens who have been legally living in the common border area for at least a year will be allowed to enter and stay in the border area of the neighbouring state for three consecutive months.
Their access will be made by a valid passport and by the small border traffic permit that will be valid for two to five years. The act does not run counter the European standards on border safety, the foreword to the law says.
Prime Minister Emil Boc had asked the Romanian lawmakers on Jan. 6 to approve the Agreement with Moldova. ‘The Agreement on the small border traffic with the Republic of Moldova is an extremely important document that targets the relations of Romania with the Republic of Moldova and it is a priority for both governments’, Boc had said. He had stressed the executive would make the required technical moves for the act to be enforced as soon as possible.
