The mandate is exercised based on the decision the IAEA Board of Governors made in Nov. 2009. Along with Germany, Romania holds the vice-chairmanship of the IAEA Board of Governors, during the 2009-2010 session, Ambassador Cornel Feruta, also the head of Romania’s Permanent Mission in Vienna being the Board’s deputy president, while Malaysia holds its chairmanship.
During the 53rd session of the IAEA General Conference, over Sept. – Oct. 2008, Romania was elected, for two years (Sept. 2008 – Sept. 2010), a member in the IAEA Board of Governors, on behalf of the regional East European Group. On the occasion of the Board’s first meeting in Oct .2008, Romania was appointed to hold one of the two vice-president posts, for one year.
According to foreign ministry, Romania’s Permanent Mission in Vienna, representing Romania as the vice-president of the IAEA Board of Governors, has been considerably contributing to the successful finalization of the intense and long process of the negotiations with the IAEA Secretariat and the member states, over agreeing on the 2010-2011 budget, the new budget being adopted during the IAEA General Conference, on Sept. 14-18, 2009.
During the meeting of the IAEA board of Governors on Sept. 22, 2009, Romania was re¬elected the Board’s vice-president, over 2009-2010. The regional East European Group and the member states of the Board of Governors decided on the renewal of Romania’s term as the Board’s deputy president, for one more session, canceling thus the enactment of the procedure rules stipulating that a state may not hold the position twice, consecutively.
