Volume of construction works up 5 pct in Nov 2009

The volume of construction works increased in November 2009 with up to 5 percent as adjusted series, although the figure was lower compared with the same interval in 2008, by 23.9 percent, the gross series, reveals data published on Tuesday by the National Statistics Institute (INS).

According to the statistics, in November 2009, the volume of construction works increased from the previous month, both as gross series and as adjusted series depending on the number of working days and seasonality, by 5 and by 3 percent respectively. The most important growths were signaled in the capital repair works (±19.1 percent) and also in the new construction works (±4.8 percent).

In terms of maintenance and current repairs works the decline was 2.1 percent. Depending on the number of working days and seasonality, in the month of November 2009 compared with October the same year, the volume of construction works saw a 3 percent growth. According to the INS, the construction works, the gross series, fell 16.7 percent over January 1 – 30 November 2009, compared with same interval in 2008, the most important drop having been detected in the major repair works (-25.7 to percent).

Depending on the type of construction, the volume of construction works declined January through November 2009 by 17.6 percent, on the residential buildings segment, by 16.6 percent, on the non-residential buildings segment and by 16.4 percent on the engineering buildings segment. The INS research was based on the results by homogeneous activities groups, as well as by companies, from one period to another, with only such economic operators in category with high economic potential (50 employees or more) having been taken into account.

The sample ensured a calculated representativeness based on the turnover of 92.50 percent of the total active units. The data was provided by some 2.500 economic operators with constructions as main activity. The maximum admitted error is of plus/minus 3 percent.
