“It is an elementary issue. When a decision is taken to vote against an ill-structured budget which worsens the downturn and deepens poverty, it is natural for a social democratic party to vote against such a budget. It is an elementary issue imposed by the party’s discipline and I am convinced that this vote will massively be against such draft budget. (…)
A combative attitude in the Parliament, the fierce support of our amendments and a final vote against such budget account for a clear attitude which will be observed by all PSD parliamentarians”, Geoana said.
He added that the Social Democrats do not wish to delay the budget adoption, but they cannot fail to support a series of amendments which, in his opinion, would also be to the advantage of the governing parties.
Geoana said that by means of the amendments his party files, it only wishes to correct the tough financial situation of certain important fields, such as agriculture or social protection.
“We will be in favour of good-sense amendments and, if there existed more openness and more political intelligence on behalf of the government, they would understand that part of our amendments are also in their interest, because I do not believe that it is normal that someone wishes to start a real civil war in Romania with the pensioners on strike, with public workers on strike, with the private sector which has already got mad due to taxes and fees.
More political wit should exist as well as the desire to leave behind a form of Puritanism. Nothing can be modified with respect to the draft budget sent by the Government to the Parliament. Is the Romanian Parliament a sort of mail box where you put a stamp and then you hope you have escaped from this debate?
There are ruling Democrat-Liberal parliamentarians who agree with us”, added Geoana. He also made a call for “a little rationality” and said that “no one can make a perfect draft budget”.
