MPs approve request for EC derogation for farmers’ subsidies

Romanian Parliamentarians, in the Wednesday sitting unanimously approved an amendment to the draft state budget authorizing the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development to ask for a derogation from the European Commission for the farmers’ subsidies.

In case the Commission assents, the ministry’s budget will be supplemented by about 1.8 billion euros, namely the amount allocated for the subsidies. The amendment to Article 16 stipulates that for supplying the money required to finance the state-funded schemes, the agriculture ministry shall be authorized to pay budget credits, throughout the year, with the finance ministry’s approval, in compliance with the EU regulations, and those to be notified and approved by the EU Committee on agriculture, and granted starting the year 2010. It is Democrat Liberal Deputy Gheorghe Tinel who proposed the amendment.
