Thus, among the few fields unaffected by the crisis in 2009 is also the film market, which recorded revenues of approximately 22 million euros, an increase by 80 percent related to the revenues in 2008, says Constantin Fugasin. The year 2009 meant a quantitative, even spectacular, increase in some segments of the cinema market in Romania.
The data presented by the videofil.ro project manager show that there were 182 premiere films run in 2009, a 7 percent increase in comparison to 2008. The 182 premieres in 2009 have collected 19 million euros, a 71 percent increase related to 2008. Romanian films, praised abroad and awarded numerous prizes, managed to collect from the Romanian cinemagoers around 340,000 euros, an increase by 22 percent in comparison with 2008.
Constantin Fugasin estimates that in 2010 there will be a 15-20 percent increase in the number of viewers and a 20-25 percent one in the amount of revenues. 2009 was marked by the launch of three new multiplexes, which resulted in 40 new cinema halls being opened. Constantin Fugasin says that in 2010 two or three multiplexes are about to be opened and some of the cinemas taken over by the City Halls and rehabilitated are to be re-opened. ‘Perhaps we will reach the number of 200 cinema screens,’ he says.
