“One can ask the question if the EU enlargement will continue beyond the current prospects. But it is a generally accepted idea that now it is not opportune to discuss this topic, beyond the ongoing accession processes”, stated Leonard Orban on Friday, on the occasion of the “European prospects” roundtable.
The European Commissioner maintained that the enlargement is one of the strongest EU foreign policy instruments, serving interests of stability, security and conflict prevention.
At the same time, Orban stated that the fifth EU enlargement wave can be viewed as a genuine success and, despite the present economic crisis, the EU enlargement benefits will be felt many years to come. “The answer to the question where Europe ends involves three aspects.
First of all, our evaluation of Europe, in its political, cultural and historical context, can differ from the evaluation made by our parents and by the evaluation our children are going to make. Secondly, we are those who decide which countries will further join the EU and if the EU enlargement is mutually advantageous. Thirdly, to admit new members require serious preparation on both sides”, Orban also said.
