‘One of the greatest satisfactions of my first term in office was to fulfill the promises I made to the Romanians from abroad, either regarding the liberalization of the labour market in a considerably large number of EU countries, or the alteration of the law on citizenship, their representation in Romania’s Parliament, or the increase in the number of the Romanian consulates abroad.
The process will go on during the coming five years through introducing the vote by correspondence, setting up a call center for the Romanians abroad or opening new consulates. For many of these projects we also need the support of the countries you live in,’ President Basescu said. He also added he had never made any difference between the Romanian citizens from Romania and those from abroad, and the promotion of the interests and the protection of the rights of both categories represents a priority for the Romanian foreign policy.
‘When, however, we talk about foreign policy, we have in view the support to the Romanians living beyond Romania’s borders. It is for them that we must implement these procedures and set up such institutions which are better placed so that we should help them in their everyday life and particularly with their contacts with Romania,’ President Basescu pointed out.
