According to a decision published in the Official Gazette on Monday, President Traian Basescu decorated the BNR governor with Romania’s Star National Order in rank of Collar.
The distinction was bestowed ‘as a sign of high appreciation for the exceptional results obtained in research and promotion, at academic level, of the economic phenomena, for the great efforts made by Mugur Isarescu as governor of BNR, developing and implementing successful banking and monetary policies and ensuring financial stability of the country.
The BNR governor was decorated before by President Traian Basescu, on February 2, 2007, with Order of Industrial and Commercial Merit in rank of Grand Officer, for remarkable results obtained in the denomination of the Romanian national currency leu (RON).
Back then, the head of state motivated his gesture as a recognition of BNR governor’s and his team’s wisdom in managing the monetary and fiscal realities of Romania.
Mugur Isarescu was also declared, in July 2009, by the World Records Academy, to be the longest-governor of a central bank.
He was named in the BNR Administration Board, as general governor and BNR Chairman on September 4, 1990. He was reappointed on July 31, 1991. His tenure as governor was prolonged on December 16, 1998, by the Parliament, for another 5 years, on September 28, 2004, having been reelected.
The Parliament approved a 5-year tenure for the newest Administration Board at the BNR on October 8, 2009, with Isarescu to stay the bank’s head. During December 1999 – November 2000, Mugur Isarescu was Prime Minister of Romania.
