The meeting, which is organized by the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of France and Mexico, is the second meeting devoted to this subject. The representatives of 20 states, of the international NGOs and of the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights attended the above- mentioned event.
They surveyed the activity of the Human Rights Council and discussed a number of possibilities of taking action with a view to strengthening the activity of the Council for the future.
Romania’s stand in this context promotes the necessity of concentrating the debates and decisions of the Council on concrete and operational aspects meant to improve the situation of human rights.
The Human Rights Council was set up through Resolution 60251 of 2006 of the UN General Assembly and has as its main aim the promotion of the universal respect for human rights and the examination of the situations when human rights are violated.
The resolution on setting up the UNHRC stipulates the revision of the functioning of the Council 5 years after it is adopted. Romania was a member of the Council between 2005 and 2007 and Romania’s permanent representative was chairman of the Council over 2006-2007.
