Basescu on Wednesday stated, at the early official talks between the two countries’ delegations that Romania’s major objective was to assist and support Moldova on its way to EU accession. ‘Our major objective is the very same with Moldova’s major goal, which is getting closer and integrating with the EU, as soon as the country is ready to do so,’ said the head of the Romanian state.
Basescu revealed that signals from Brussels in this respect are positive and noted the possibility of creating a partnership. ‘We have signals from Brussels about the Republic of Moldova that are positive. In the five months since the new power took charge in Chisinau it has proven very convincing in its intentions to resume road to the EU, which made us think of creating a partnership between Romania and Moldova, intended to accelerate the process of rapprochement of Moldova to the EU,’ Traian Basescu pointed out.
Interim President of Republic of Moldova Mihai Ghimpu hailed the idea brought into talks by the Romanian President. ‘This partnership is very welcome for Moldova,’ he said. Traian Basescu is currently paying a two-day visit to Moldova, at the invitation of his counterpart, Mihai Ghimpu.
