Astra Vagoane to make its first electric train

After recently launching its newest project to build the ultra low floor tram ‘Imperio’, Astra Vagoane Calatori SA (Astra Passenger Carriages) plans to make its first electric train too, this spring at the latest, Valer Blidar, majority shareholder of the Arad-based company said.

‘Electric locomotives hauled trains represent a solution for the entire world and, since we do not have such trains running in Romania, we want to move very quickly, so that no later than next spring to inaugurate our first electric train [...],’ Valer Blidar told.

Astra Vagoane Calatori on Wednesday signed a new partnership with Siemens to produce modern tram wagons, ultra silent and with ultra low floor, ‘Imperio’, after a first cooperation with this company has materialized in the manufacture of the ‘Blue Arrow ‘ train.

‘For us, this step is very important, building a new type of transport vehicle. It is about an urban rail vehicle, the tram, to allow us maintain our employees and maybe even hire others. It is also another fact that counts, that we will have available from now on a new source of financing. Besides opening new horizons, this partnership will make us feel safe from the viewpoint of revenue growth,’ said Blidar.
