Senator Gyorgy Frunda of the Hungarian Democratic Union of Romania (UDMR), member of the Romanian delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, was elected on Thursday chairman of the PACE Sub-committee on national minorities.

Frunda told that he is working on a draft protocol to the European Convention on Human Rights regarding the fundamental rights of national minorities. “I would like to obtain as broad a consensus as possible on this issue,” the UDMR Senator remarked. He added that another objective he envisages in his capacity as chairman of the PACE Sub¬committee on national minorities is related to the necessary approaches for “those countries which did not sign or ratify the Framework Convention on languages of national minorities to do so.”

“In the third place, I want to make the necessary arrangements at parliamentary level to convince the Parliaments of Council of Europe member states to implement in good faith the Framework Convention on national minorities and the European Charter of Local Self-Government,” added Frunda.
