According to a Thursday release by MEP Sarbu, it is important for Romanians to know not only the arguments of Rosia Montana Gold Corporation, but those that raise environmental concerns as well. Sarbu also pointed to the financial resources the project’s promoters invest to give it a “facelift”, resources which are significantly higher than those available to its opponents.
“I openly opposed the project ever since it took shape, and I will further oppose it. Because, beyond the arguments brought by reputed specialists who are invited to advocate the project, beyond the nicely crafted on-paper rationale, beyond the eye-catching figures, some essential questions persist that have not been answered yet, and I fear, that will not be answered in good faith,” said Daciana Sarbu.
According to the cited MEP, such questions include: how can a mining project that uses cyanide style itself as “responsible mining”, at a time when Europeans give up the cyanide-based technology and condemn this practice; how can it be acceptable in the European Union to set yourself as a goal to destroy a community and the environment for profit and call this “development”; why does the poverty of the area’s residents become a merchandise investors try to buy in full cynicism; how moral is the use, in cold blood, of the fear of economic crisis for the investors’ profit, and others of the like.
“Ros ia Montana can become part of UNESCO heritage because of its archaeological riches. I wonder if gold were discovered in the gardens of the Palace of Versailles, beneath the Acropolis in Athens, or in Venice, would they be ready to bury them in cyanide too?”, the MEP asked rhetorically.
Daciana Sarbu admits that people in Rosia Montana are very poor, many of them are hungry and desperate, but this project does nothing else but buy them a few more years of life, after which it would cast them away, probably with a ruined health.
