In an interview to Pro TV Chisinau on Wednesday, part of a visit to Moldova, Romania’s President Traian Basescu rated as ‘Bolshevik propaganda’ the statements of Moldovan MP Mark Tkacuk, who said in relation to Basescu’s visit that ‘the criminal has returned the crime scene.’

‘You should know that the same kind of propaganda has told the citizens of Moldova lies about Romania’s imperialism and Romania attempting to annex Moldova. You may know that Bolsheviks have never been ashamed. They believe they can say anything, anytime and to anyone. But here we see that the Moldovan people has not trusted them and ousted them.
There was also an attempt in Romania to win the election through lies, but the people could not be fooled. These two countries have people who are more intelligent than their politicians lacking in principles,’ said Basescu.

Asked about his view of the relationship with Moldova if the Communist Party wins back power in Moldova, Basescu replied that the people of Moldova has to be clear about their option to follow the path to the European Union, ‘where there will be no milk and honey, but where any people can ascend to prosperity.’ ‘We would like, from the bottom of our heart, to see Moldova advance to the European Union because blood brothers are the closest to each other.

That is how we see the Moldovans. And you should know that we are not discriminating between Moldovans of Romanian origins speaking Romanian and those who have been brought in. To us, the 4.5 million citizens of Moldova are equals. Being in a country caught between a rock and the blue sea that cannot see a clear direction is hard today, in a world where the nations and the people know exactly what they want,’ said Basescu.

He added that he was naďve to believe former Moldovan President Vladimir Voronin to be a pro-European chief of state, but added that he was fooled by Voronin’s double talk that generated misunderstandings. He said he has personally forgiven Voronin, but Voronin’s problem is with history.
‘I am a Christian, so I forgive Mr. Voronin. His problem is with history, with his place in the history of Moldova. He may go down in history as a politician who stymied the progress of Moldova and its bid to join the European Union, or as a light figurehead who said one thing and did other,’ said Basescu.

Commenting on Moldova’s possible accession to the EU without the local conflict in Transnistria having been solved, Basescu said the experience of Cyprus was a ‘highly unpleasant lesson to the EU.’ ‘I believe that a major effort has to be deployed, and not by Chisinau alone.

The EU and the USA should be more perseverant when it comes to clarifying the situation in Transnistria. Romania was a party to the negotiation system. But because of an unfortunate approach of the Romanian Government in 1991 Romania had to pull out. It should have stayed and become the advocate of Moldova and Moldova’s territorial unity in this format.
Now there is a quite close 5+2 format where there is no place for additions. And yet, thanks Lord, the European Union, of which Romania is a member, is there and Romania can share its expertise,’ said Basescu.
