The UN special representative voiced his personal gratitude towards the Romanian authorities for supporting his activity as head of the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), in the field of security and immediate protection.
Also, Kai Eide thanked, on behalf of the UN Secretariat General, for the efforts the Romanian Government made in setting up in Bucharest of a training center for UN troops participating in peacekeeping operations, specialized in immediate protection.
The UN dignitary also added that, in order the performances of the international community in Afghanistan to be improved, it is required a change of attitude, a stronger orientation towards civil priorities, dialogue and a better understanding of the local specificity and of the interests of various factions in the Afghan society.
Minister Teodor Baconschi, in his turn, reminded the firm and consequent presence of Romania, at various levels, in Afghanistan, as long as the international community deems it necessary and until targets are eventually achieved.
The head of Romanian diplomacy gave assurance stability and reconstruction of Afghanistan continue to be among the foreign policy and defense priorities of Romania, with the country to meet is pledges in the area, the AME release also showed.
