According to the Ministry of Administration and the Interior and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the agreement allows both countries’ residents who have been living in a place close to the border for at least one year to travel without a visa in the similar zone in terms of area situated in the other country, based on small border traffic permits and on a valid passport.
About one million citizens of the Republic of Moldova living in 361 border places could benefit from this. The permits are valid for two years. The Government on February 23 approved the emergency ordinance on supplementing GEO 194/2002 on the regime of foreigners in Romania. The regulations adopted by the Government observe the Schengen Convention, which grants Romania the right, as a European Union member state, to formulate exceptions from the normal border traffic.
