Secretary of State Bogdan Aurescu to launch appeal for Conference on Disarmament to resume substantive works

Secretary of State for Strategic Affairs Bogdan Aurescu on Wednesday, March 3, will participate, in Geneva, in the 13th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council and also in the works of the Conference of Disarmament, where he is going to launch a call for resumption of substantive works of the Conference on global nuclear disarmament, informs a release of the Romanian Foreign Ministry (MAE).

The Romanian dignitary, at the UN Human Rights Council’s session, will plead for the strengthening of the Council’s efficiency, a body having as first responsibility promoting, at the scale of the universe, the fundamental rights and freedoms of man.
At the Disarmament Conference, the Romanian official will speak about how important this international multilateral forum of negotiation in the field of disarmament is for Romania, and he will launch an appeal the Conference to re-run substantive works focusing global nuclear disarmament issues.

Moreover, on the sidelines of its participation in the works of the Conference on Disarmament, Aurescu will have a meeting with Sergei Ordzhonikidze, head of the UN Office in Geneva, Secretary General of the Conference of Disarmament, as well as personal representative of UN Secretary General.
According to MAE, this meeting represents a new opportunity for Romania to address the current situation of the Conference on Disarmament, and also the country’s contribution to the Conference and the perspectives of the global nuclear disarmament process, in 2010.
