„As regards the proposal of the Academy of Romanian Scientists Traian Basescu to be made honorary member, the Presidential Administration specified that the initiative did not get the approval neither of the President nor of the presidential institution,” the release said.
According to the document, the head of state considered it was his duty to promulgate laws and designate headquarters, which is why he could not accept the title of honorary member of AOSR.
„President Traian Basescu considers that promulgation of laws and designation of headquarters are among his job’s responsibilities, that must not be rewarded with academic titles.
The President thanked the AOSR members for their initiative, but because of the aforementioned reasons he could not accept the title of honorary member of AOSR,” it was mentioned in the press release.
The proposal that President Basescu to be offered the title of honorary member was made on Thursday, March 11, at the general meeting of members of Academy of Romanian Scientists.
The Academy of Romanian Scientists (AOSR) is the continuer and sole successor of the Romanian Academy of Sciences (1936-1948) and of the Association of Romanian Scientists founded in 1956.
Among the honorary members of the Academy are Nobel Prize laureates Louis de Broglie (French physicist), Werner-Karl Heisenberg (German physicist), Jean Perrin (French physicist) and Paul Sabatier (French chemist).
Romanian cell biologist George Emil Palade, a Nobel laureate for medicine, was in his turn an AOSR honorary member.
The proposal that President Basescu should become an honorary member of the institution was made on Thursday, in the general assembly of the Academy members, in recognition for his support to the institution, AOSR officials told.
According to the cited sources, the proposal was made by AOSR president, retired General Prof. Vasile Candea, and was previously discussed in the institution’s Scientific Council and the Scientists General Assembly.
