Romania’s CO2 certificates of interest for other countries

13 martie 2010

Information in English

Minister of Environment and Forestry Borbely Laszlo told a press conference in Sovata (north-west of Bucharest) on Friday that Romania is conducting negotiations with three countries interested in purchasing the CO2 certificates Romania owns, naming only two of them – Spain and Japan.

‘These certificates (carbon dioxide emissions certificates – editor’s note), which unfortunately Romania has not used, are worth around one billion euros. When we talk about one billion euros in green investments, then the important investors also change their options because this is free money for Romania.

The Government passed the State Agreement Law while the Governmental Resolution regarding the destinations of this money will be passed in two weeks. We are holding talks with three countries which want to buy these certificates, because Romania is doing all right, given that after 1990 many factories were closed, thus we can sell these one billion euro worth of certificates,’ said Borbely.

He also added that Romania holds a significant surplus of carbon dioxide emissions certificates and following the Kyoto Protocol, it has the right to sell this surplus.
