Two-metre thick snow layer and high risk of avalanches in Fagaras massif

Risk of avalanches in the Fagaras massif (south) has reached level 4, with a snow layer two-metre thick at high altitudes, because of the snowfalls in recent days, warns the Public Rescue Service (SPS) Arges.

In the Balea Lac area -2000m quotas – the snow layer measures 200 cm, 10-20 cm of which being newly fallen snow, which turns into a powdery snow layer, completely unstable, SPS Arges representatives announced. In some areas, the wind gusted up to 80 km / hour, creating deposits of snow, with risk of avalanches producing being here even higher.

In the case of risk level 4, from 5 possible, the snow is less stable on most slopes inclined enough, with possibility existing here medium or even large avalanche be triggered even by weak overloads. The Arges rescuers warned that the main ridge trail and tourist routes to accede to the Fagaras ridge, regardless of altitude, remained closed. For the end of the week, there are expected snowfalls, which could increase the risk of avalanches occurring.
