‘I have said it clearly: they are Romanian citizens, they have the right to air their opinions, but those who convened in Sf. Gheorghe do not represent any institution of the Romanian State. We have a Constitution that clearly indicates the official language of Romania. The main concern of the Ministry of Administration and Interior, as the main law enforcement institution, is to make sure the Constitution is observed,’ said Blaga.
The nearly 250 mayors, local councillors and county councillors of the central counties of Covasna, Harghita and Mures having attended the second general meeting of the locally elected officials of the self-styled Szeklers’ Land on Friday passed a decision under which they pledge to secure equal status for the Hungarian language as the Romanian language in the three counties.
The decision also mentions that any citizen of the self-styled Szeklers’ Land shall be entitled to use both languages in writing and in speaking and the local administrations shall pledge to secure equality between the two languages.
