President Traian Basescu said on Monday that he did not want to impose a certain kind of Constitution as his mandate was not connected to the fundamental law.

„Nobody should think that I want to impose a certain kind of Constitution. From my point of view, my mandate is not affected by the new Constitution. I am carrying out my mandate on the basis of this Constitution and this is why any approach like ‘the President wants to strengthen the his power’ is superfluous as I have no connection to the future Constitution,” the Head of State told the meeting with the political parties at the Cotroceni Palace.

According to him, a legislative process of modernizing Romania as well as a process of decentralization connected to the Constitution are necessary. „I, for one, think that we should also consider the country’s administrative reorganization, besides the obligations that are incumbent on us deriving from the process that took place in November, the referendum,” also said President Basescu.
