President Traian Basescu on Monday informed the leaders of the parliamentary parties, whom he invited to consultations, that his aim was the achievement of a consensus of the political class on the modernization of the state.

„My intention is for us to create a kind of dialogue that should refer to the national interest, not to the party one. My aim is for us to achieve a consensus on the third aim of the Romanian political class, after the accession to NATO and the European Union, namely the modernization of the state, which also implies considering the referendum on November 2009,” said Traian Basescu at the beginning of the meeting with he representatives of the political groups.

He congratulated the leaders of the opposition Social Democratic Party, of the opposition National Liberal Party for their being elected at the head of their parties and wished them success.
