‘I am very much appreciating the constructive stance of both parties, which left behind a material. All their proposals are food for thought and I believe that formulas will be found in the process of revising the Constitution. I would like to confess to you that I still do not understand PSD’s proposal at point one.
For the rest, all are worth discussing and I confess that I agree with most of them,’ the President said in relation to the materials left behind by PSD and PC on Monday, when they walked away from consultations with Basescu.
Basescu also mentioned that PSD proposes that Parliament be left bicameral, with one chamber to be elected directly and the seconded to be made up of local communities officials, patterned on a model in the Lisbon Treaty.
‘I confess that I do not know the article in the Lisbon Treaty that has such a provision. Before being pointed to the article, I would like to know whether or mot PSD is aware of the contents of the Lisbon Treaty. I am among the heads of state that negotiated the treaty line by line.
I do not know of any recommendation therein that there should be bicameral parliaments in the EU member states or that a non-elected chamber be set up. But maybe this is because of my failure to understand what I read of the treaty, although, I repeat, this treaty has been part of my activity at the European Council summits of the past three years and I went thorugh it line by line,’ the President said.
Basescu added that he has no objection over the PSD’s proposals and said the suggestions of the PSD and PC are a significant contribution. He added that he will encourage the other political parties to take into account the PSD’s suggestions.
