„There is suspicion of bird flu in an isolated establishment in Letea village, Tulcea County, where samples were taken from and then sent to the laboratory in Great Britain. We already took all the prevention and control measures in the establishment under discussion, the area has already been disinfected, as well as the entire village, which numbers around 100 houses,” said Zlotea.
He added that the Veterinary Authority was continuously monitoring the migratory birds flow, because the bird flu risk is highest over this period. The European Commission on Tuesday confirmed the risk areas signalled by the Romanian authorities in relation to the eruption of H5N1 bird flu with a high pathogenic degree in a farm in Letea village, Tulcea County.
This is the first confirmed bird flu case in the European Union since March 2009, when the virus had been signalled in Germany.
Frederic Vincent, spokesperson for the European Commissioner for Health John Dalli, said that immediate prevention measures provided the determination of a protection area on a 3- km radius around the farm and of a surveillance area on a 10-km radius, considered to be of high risk.
