The visit confirms the very good evolution in recent years of the relationship between Bucharest and Baku and also Romania’s interest in developing the strategic partnership between Romania and Azerbaijan, whose foundation was laid in 2009.
Besides talks with Azerbaijani Foreign Minister, the Romanian Minister’s visit agenda includes meetings with President Ilham Aliyev, Prime Minister Artur Rasizade and Parliament Speaker Ogtay Assadov, as well as a meeting with the Minister of Industry and Energy, Natig Aliyev.
During the visit, there will be analyzed the ways of implementing the strategic partnership between the two countries, as well as the prospects of improving bilateral cooperation, with emphasis on energy.
The Republic of Azerbaijan is a key partner of the EU in terms of diversification of energy sources and materialization of the Nabucco project, which remains a priority for Romania.
The agenda of the talks will also include the analysis of regional evolutions, as well as the prospects for deepening relations of Azerbaijan with EU and NATO, areas in which Romania could share from its own experience. Minister Baconschi will also reaffirm Romania’s active support in helping Azerbaijan to get closer to European structures and he will confirm the role Romania can play in the relationship with the EU.
Diplomatic ties between the two countries were established on June 19, 1992, Romania being the second country in the world after Turkey, which recognized the independence of Azerbaijan (December 11, 1991). In the context of the official visit to Bucharest of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev (September 28-29, 2009), there was signed a declaration establishing a strategic partnership between the two countries.
On January 1, 2009, Romania has taken over, for a period of two years, the office of NATO Contact Point Embassy in the Republic Azerbaijan.
