Premier Emil Boc and Minister of Administration and the Interior Vasile Blaga on Thursday inaugurated the railway cross-border point at Ungheni, Iasi County (eastern Romania).
This cross-border point replaces the one at Nicolina and the decision on moving it to Ungheni was made in order to meet the infrastructure and equipment conditions stipulated in the Schengen catalogue.
One of the reasons for which this decision was made is connected to the fact that the location of the Nicolina cross-border point is part of the national cultural patrimony and cannot be changed in order to meet the standards required for joining the Schengen area.
In 2009 more than 75,000 people, of whom 25,500 Romanian citizens and 52,599 foreign citizens, crossed the border here, most of them (70 percent) being Moldovans.
