Romania’s population dwindles by 6,382 people in January – statistics

Romania’s population decreased in January this year by 6,382 people as compared to December last year, and the natural population growth is negative (the death rate is higher than the live birth rate), the National Institute of Statistics informs.

In January this year 17,327 children were born (9.5 liveborn babies per 1,000 inhabitants), 129 more than in December. The number of people who died in January was 23,709 (13 deaths per 1,000 inhabitants) i.e. 1,354 dead less than in December.
The registrar’s office recorded in January 4,841 marriages (2.7 marriages per 1,000 inhabitants), 140 marriages more than the previous month. By final court decisions, there were 1,215 divorces pronounced (0.67 divorces per 1,000 inhabitants), that is 1,059 less than in December.

In comparison with January last year the number of liveborn babies was smaller by 767 babies in this January, while the number of deceased was smaller by 812 from January 2009. The number of marriages in this January was by 324 less than the in same month last year. By final court decisions in January 2010 there were 268 less divorces than January last year.
