„Of course, today’s resolution is not much more than a signal, but it adds to other such messages received in relation to the use of cyanide-based technologies and therefore the European Commission cannot ignore it,” said Daciana Sarbu, a member of the EP Environment Committee.
MEP Renate Weber (PNL), the initiator of the motion for resolution on behalf of the ALDE Group, welcomed the adoption thereof in the form initially agreed upon by the EP political groups.
„The resolution adopted today is a very strong signal sent by the European Parliament on how mining should be done in the future, in Europe and all over the world. Given that the resolution calls on the Commission and on Member States to not support any project that uses cyanides, the Romanian government must understand that this message addresses it directly and that its hasty and desperate efforts to implement the Rosia Montana mining project must stop,” added Renate Weber.
Present at the EP headquarters in Brussels, chairman of the Green Party Remus Cernea on Wednesday told that the vote given on May 5 is „an important step forward, a victory of reason against the financial interests that would have sacrificed the environment.’ „Iťs remarkable that all amendments by PDL were rejected and an amendment that is highly intelligent and particularly important for communities like the one in Rosia Montana was accepted.
The amendment lays emphasis on the development of communities in such areas and on diversification possibilities here,” said Cernea. The European Parliament on Wednesday passed a resolution requesting the general prohibition of the use of cyanide-based mining technologies all over the EU until the end of 2011, in order to prevent ecological disasters like the one occurred in 2000 at Baia Mare.
