„There exists a CSAT decision coming from the government and passed on to Parliament. That decision cannot be questioned. [...] For now, the document advanced to Parliament refers only to this offer, to this inter-governmental agreement between Romania and the United States. If the document is rejected following debates in Parliament, the Ministry will probably consider other offers too,’ Canacheu told.
He reminded that bids regarding the multi-role aircraft have been analyzed for the past two years, with the CSAT proposal on buying F-16 planes having been the one determining the other companies to submit new bids.
The joint Defense Committees of the Senate and Chamber of Deputies on Sunday have called representatives of SAAB and of the consortium that proposed Eurofighter to receive new more information related to their bids submitted for multi-role planes.
On this occasion, the Chairman of the Senate Defense Commission, Liberal Teodor Melescanu, specified that the offer of Italian-based company Alenia, part of the consortium with interests in the Eurofighter programme, is one of industrial cooperation, offering Romania the possibility to enter the programme, and including also the transfer of technology.
He also specified that although the offer of Italians gets closer, in terms of price, to that of Swedish company SAAB, Eurofighter is a plane with quite different qualities, having been bought by many European countries and that, unlike the Gripen and F16, is biomotor.
Maurizio Demitri, Alenia’s senior vice chairman, said that the company provides not only off¬set, but also transfer of technology, which could generate more than 5,000 jobs. He also said that, for 1 billion euros, the company provides 24 „operational” planes, that is second-hand, without weapons on board, which can be delivered no later than in 2012.
